London: It's time to breath with the trees

Annie- Rose Fiddian-Green Breathing with Trees

Brooke-Walder Gallery, 15 Duke Street, St James's, London

Brooke-Walder Gallery is pleased to present the inaugural solo exhibition Breathing with Trees by British artist Annie-Rose Fiddian-Green, opening on 14 June and running until 14 July 2024. This is also the first solo exhibition to showcase the gallery’s new London space at 15 Duke Street, St James's. Within the exhibition, Fiddian-Green returns to drawing in its purest form and offers an alternative view of what the artist considers to be the “enchantment of the ever-changing earth.”

In this latest series of new works, Fiddian-Green continues her exploration into the emotional essence and tangible presence of ancient trees, weaving together her meticulous study of drawing and reflection on nature. Crafted against the backdrop of spring in Surrey, the landscape serves as a wellspring of inspiration for Fiddian-Green's palette, motifs, and subjects, encompassing swirling lines that swell with the rhythm of nature's heartbeat.

Drawing from previous interrogations of the human body as a rhetorical device, Fiddian-Green transforms her drawings of trees into enigmatic shapes and spirals. The forms of trees emphasize her desire to decipher mycelium and other rooted patterns, affirmed through their often-disorientating displays. Works including Whispering Oak and Breathing, Growing, Changing offer Fiddian-Green’s experimentation with natural elements, introducing whimsical interpretations of these foundational aspects of rural life. Playing with these distorted lines reminds us that her drawing aims to take us beyond literal presentation.

Through this new body of work, I continue to learn, pivot, and change, continuously challenging the processes and techniques I am familiar with. The trees have been a constant in my life, rooting me, and bringing peace. One always feels better after spending time amongst them! I hope these trees may provide a sense of connection and grounding in an often overstimulated world. I’m thrilled to be showing my work with Brooke-Walder Gallery, bringing my trees to the heart of London, to this exciting new space.

Oliver Brooke-Walder comments: “I've selected Annie’s work for one of the first shows in the gallery as she aligns with my passion for showcasing British art. There's a beautiful juxtaposition in her artwork, combining British landscapes and nature, as well as capturing the powerful feeling of the ‘soul’ or essence and life force of trees. Annie’s work encapsulates the core of what I aim to showcase here at the gallery and I’m honoured to be showing her new work.”
